Alaska Airlines Flight Delayed or Cancelled? What Alaska Commits To

On the DOT dashboard, Alaska Airlines makes one of the broadest sets of commitments of any US airline for controllable delays. Here is what that covers, and what the federal refund rule adds.

Alaska's commitments on the DOT dashboard

According to the US DOT Airline Customer Service Dashboard, for cancellations and significant delays within Alaska's control, Alaska commits to:

  • Rebooking on Alaska at no extra cost
  • Rebooking on a partner airline at no extra cost
  • A meal or meal voucher if you wait 3 hours or more
  • A hotel for overnight disruptions
  • Ground transportation to and from the hotel
  • A credit or travel voucher when you wait 3+ hours from scheduled departure
  • Frequent flyer miles when you wait 3+ hours from scheduled departure

Alaska does not commit to cash compensation. Alaska's loyalty program is now called Atmos Rewards, which replaced Mileage Plan. Alaska's customer service commitment page on alaskaair.com has the current amounts and how to request them.

Amounts: secondary sources report a discount code of at least $50 or at least 2,000 points, as a choice of one. Confirm on alaskaair.com before relying on specific figures.

Hawaiian Airlines, now part of the same company, is listed separately on the DOT dashboard with similar commitments.

The DOT refund rule

Under the DOT refund rule (14 CFR Part 260), if Alaska cancels your flight, or significantly changes or delays it, and you choose not to fly and do not accept rebooking or a credit, the airline must offer a refund under the DOT rule to your original payment method.

A "significant" change means 3+ hours for domestic flights, 6+ hours for international flights, a different airport, extra connections, or a cabin downgrade. Credit card refunds are due within 7 business days. Accepting the new flight or a credit generally ends the refund right for that ticket.

Weather and air traffic control

These commitments apply to disruptions within the airline's control. Weather, air traffic control, and similar events usually fall outside them, though the refund rule for cancellations applies regardless of the cause.

What to do

  1. Record your scheduled and actual times and the reason Alaska gives.
  2. Ask for a meal voucher at the 3-hour mark, and a hotel if you are stranded overnight.
  3. Request the discount code or miles if the delay was controllable.
  4. Keep receipts and confirmation numbers.
  5. Follow up in writing if anything is missing.
