Delta Flight Delayed or Cancelled? What You Can Ask For

Delta runs one of the largest networks in the US, so when something goes wrong, a lot of travelers get stuck at once. Here is what US rules and Delta's published commitments say, so you can ask for the right things.

Cancelled or significantly delayed: the refund rule

The US DOT refund rule (14 CFR Part 260) covers Delta flights to, from, or within the US. If Delta cancels your flight, or significantly changes or delays it, and you choose not to travel and do not accept rebooking, an eCredit, or another voucher, the rule requires a full refund to your original form of payment, including taxes and fees.

"Significant" means a domestic flight that departs 3+ hours earlier or arrives 3+ hours later than planned (6+ hours internationally). It also covers a change of airport, added connections, or a downgrade to a lower cabin.

Credit card refunds are due within 7 business days, other payment types within 20 calendar days. Accepting the new flight or an eCredit generally ends your refund right for that ticket.

Delta's commitments when the delay is within its control

Per the DOT Airline Customer Service Dashboard, for controllable cancellations and significant delays Delta commits to:

  • Rebooking on Delta at no extra cost
  • Rebooking on a partner airline at no extra cost
  • A meal or meal voucher if you wait 3 hours or more
  • A hotel for overnight disruptions
  • Ground transportation to and from the hotel

Delta does not list a commitment to cash, travel credits, or SkyMiles for delays. Some travelers report receiving goodwill eCredits or miles, but that is discretionary. Delta has a reimbursement request form on delta.com for eligible out-of-pocket expenses.

Weather and air traffic control are usually treated as outside the airline's control.

Delta flights from Europe or the UK

Departing from an EU or UK airport? EU261 or UK261 may give you fixed compensation for a 3+ hour arrival delay or a late cancellation within the airline's control, along with meals and hotels while you wait. See our EU261 page.

Steps to take

  1. Document times and the stated cause. The Fly Delta app often shows the reason. Take screenshots.
  2. Ask an agent for vouchers if you have waited 3+ hours or are stuck overnight.
  3. Hold onto receipts for meals, hotel, and rides.
  4. Choose refund or rebooking deliberately.
  5. Write to Delta after your trip with your confirmation number, flight details, timeline, receipts, and the commitments you are relying on.

FAQ

Does Delta pay compensation for delays? No US federal rule requires cash for delays, and Delta does not commit to it on the DOT dashboard. Meals, hotels, and rebooking apply to controllable disruptions.

My Delta flight is delayed and will probably be cancelled. What should I do? Check the app for rebooking options and decide whether you would rather rebook or take a refund if it is cancelled. Save your screenshots.

Can I submit my hotel receipt to Delta? Yes. Submit it through Delta's reimbursement request with your flight details. Approval depends on the cause of the disruption.

Where can I complain if I disagree? You can file a complaint with the US DOT Office of Aviation Consumer Protection.
