Aer Lingus Flight Delayed or Cancelled? Ireland / UK / EU Checklist
Aer Lingus flies short-haul across Europe and Ireland and long-haul to North America, with Dublin (DUB) as its main hub. If your Aer Lingus flight was delayed or cancelled, capture the facts first—then put a clear request in writing. Delay Draft helps you draft an Aer Lingus delay letter that you send. We do not contact Aer Lingus for you, and we are not a law firm.
This is general guidance only. Outcomes depend on your itinerary, delay length, cause, and Aer Lingus’s review. Delay Draft does not promise compensation, refunds, or that any claim will be approved.
Dublin hub: when EU261 or UK261 may apply
Many Aer Lingus flights depart from Ireland (an EU member) or from UK airports. In plain terms:
- Departures from Ireland or other EU/EEA/Swiss airports often lead passengers to check EU Regulation 261/2004 (EU261)
- Departures from a UK airport often lead passengers to check UK261
- Some Ireland–UK itineraries raise questions under both frameworks; usually only one set of rules is used for the same disruption—confirm with official EU / CAA guidance for your route
Whether those rules cover your booking is not automatic. Codeshares (including IAG partners), connecting tickets, and the reason for the disruption all matter. Check your boarding pass, departure airport, operating carrier, and official guidance. See our EU261 overview, Ireland flight delay guide, and UK261 guide for orientation. Delay Draft does not decide which rules cover your trip.
Short-haul vs. transatlantic: high-level differences
Aer Lingus operates busy short-haul routes (Ireland–UK, Ireland–Europe) and longer transatlantic services. Under EU261-style frameworks, distance bands and arrival delay at your final destination on the same ticket often matter for any fixed amounts that may apply—no amounts are guaranteed, and extraordinary circumstances may exclude them.
For a written request, you do not need to calculate a payout yourself. Focus on documenting:
- Whether the flight was short-haul or long-haul (route and distance as shown on your ticket)
- Scheduled vs. actual arrival at your final destination
- Whether you connected (for example DUB → US, or a European connection through Dublin)
- Marketing vs operating carrier if a partner flew the aircraft
Keep the letter factual. Let Aer Lingus respond to whether EU261, UK261, or its customer process may apply to your itinerary.
What to capture at Dublin or in the app
While you are still at the airport—or as soon as you get a notification—save:
- Flight number, date, and route
- Scheduled vs. new departure and arrival times
- The reason shown in the Aer Lingus app, email, SMS, or given by staff
- Whether meals, vouchers, hotel, or rebooking were offered
- Screenshots of delay boards, push notifications, and boarding-pass screens
- How late you arrived at your final destination (important for many EU261 / UK261 reviews)
If you pay for food, a hotel, or ground transport yourself, keep receipts. Write down desk references if staff give verbal updates. Accepting a rebooking or voucher can affect refund options in some systems—decide carefully and keep proof of what you chose.
Writing to Aer Lingus after disruption
After you land—or if the flight never went—send a dated letter or formal web form submission that includes:
- Your name and booking / PNR reference
- Flight number(s), date, and airports (note marketing vs operating carrier on codeshares)
- Timeline of the delay or cancellation, including final arrival if you connected
- Reason given to you at the gate, in the app, or by email
- Care offered or expenses you incurred (keep receipts)
- What you are asking Aer Lingus to review (care, refund/re-routing choice, or an EU261/UK261 review as applicable)
Attach boarding passes, screenshots, and receipts. Keep a copy of what you submitted and any case or claim number Aer Lingus returns.
If you need help organizing the wording, Delay Draft builds a clear letter from your flight details; you remain the sender.
